Big Shot Folders, Dies, & Fails

A few weeks ago, I purchased a Sizzix Big Shot Embosser. I have had some fun using various folders that produce varying effects. The plastic are good for texture and most work fairly well for that on 24 gauge copper, but pewter picks up some amazing impressions. I have used both .8 and 1mm, and I am pretty sure 1mm is maximum thickness for running through the machine without making some adjustments.

I also purchased several carbon steel Vintaj Decoemboss folders, which work well on both 24 gauge copper and 1mm pewter, as designed, but the patterns are limited. I have been unable to find this type of folder from other manufacturers, unlike the plastic ones, which are everywhere. I also experimented with a couple of Decoetch pads recently delivered, and unfortunately, I have not had much success so far.

Surprisingly, the Bigz Dies cut 24 gauge copper and .8mm pewter fairly well, but as the name indicates, they are big. I am imagining fun, and yes obnoxious, costume jewelry ideas, but having a hard time seeing how I will use them that often. I was, however, able to cut fifteen 1″ circles at once, which may seem more efficient than hammering them one at a time using my round disc cutter, but it does take some effort to pop them out. I am not really sure it’s faster than my disc cutter. The edges were smooth, and probably the amount of wasted metal is about the same, I am just not sure it is worth it in the long run.
