Hi, I’m Melissa, the designer and maker behind this one-woman show I call Mielo Abelo Designs. This site, like my jewelry, is a work in progress. I plan to post my finished pieces and also share some of my process getting there.
I began beading in March 2018. My mother was turning 70, and my sister decided to throw her a Diva Party, and I decided I was going to make her a funky, sparkly necklace on a whim. I had signed up for a class at a local craft store and bought the items needed, and about an hour before the class was scheduled, I was notified it was canceled. I was determined, however, and so I watched some videos, looked at some pictures and read some how-to’s, then I dove right into it. I had no idea that whim was going to turn into a passion! What I love about this craft is that there is always something new to learn, and I love to learn and experiment and stretch my own boundaries.
After starting with basic bead stringing, I have learned how to incorporate wire and sheet metal into my jewelry projects, including creating my own earring wires. My handcrafted original jewelry designs include necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, using mostly natural stone, glass, and metal. I am not a metal smith, but I flame color, paint, ink, stamp, emboss, and shape metal to create interesting additions to my designs. I am fascinated by the process and the results, and try to stretch my own limits with my current skill level using the tools I have available.
I carefully consider the components that I use, choosing only high quality copper, 14kt gold, and Argentium silver to create my earrings wires. Most often, I use stainless steel chain, but I also do use rhodium and silver and gold plated. I make most of my clasps using German style wire that is tarnish resistant.
My goal is to offer affordable one of a kind jewelry while using quality components with a focus on workmanship. I craft each piece with that goal in mind. My design process takes time, which is why my item listings are limited.
I could not possibly post all of the jewelry I have made since I started, and believe me much of it is not post-worthy, but I may add older pieces in the gallery at some point in the future. I am not exactly sure where I want to take this site as I type this section, and I have a feeling it will continually evolve, as I hope my jewelry does.
I am open to collaborating with you on custom pieces. Reach out to me if you have ideas.
I’d love to make my jewelry your jewelry.
